Glauber's salt 100 g

  • Effect

The active ingredient is virtually non-absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract into the intestinal cells and draws water into the intestine. The intestinal contents are softened and increase in volume. The enlarged intestinal contents cause a stretching stimulus on the intestinal wall, thus triggering the bowel movement reflex.

  • Application

The total dose should not be exceeded without consulting a doctor or pharmacist. Maximum dose: For rapid bowel movements in approximately 2 to 4 hours, you can take 20-30 g (1-2 tablespoons) of powder dissolved in 500 ml of water. The laxative effect usually occurs after 8 to 10 hours.

  • Optional in the Salufast program

Colon cleansing before fasting has a long tradition in Europe, not least because it is said to have various beneficial effects. In contrast, colon cleansing during fasting has been scientifically studied and has shown no significant advantages over fasting without colon cleansing.

Glauber's salt

Glauber's salt (sodium sulfate) has a long history of use as a laxative, is the most extensively researched, and has proven effective to this day. Glauber's salt cannot be absorbed by the body and remains in the intestines until excretion. The sodium sulfate binds the water, and through osmosis, the water content in the intestines increases. The water absorbs feces, food residue, dead cells, and bacteria and is transported through the intestines (via peristalsis, the natural intestinal activity). The increase in volume and peristalsis ultimately lead to the excretion of the water.

Sodium sulfate decahydrate

dosage

Always take this medicine exactly as directed. If you are unsure, please consult your doctor or pharmacist. Unless otherwise directed, adults should drink 2 to 4 teaspoons (10 to 20 g) of powder dissolved in approximately 250 ml of water. For rapid bowel movements, drink 1 to 2 tablespoons (20 to 30 g) dissolved in approximately 500 ml of water. Children over 6 years of age should take half the dose.

Duration of application

This medicine should only be used for a short period of time. Longer-term use will increase constipation. Please consult your doctor or pharmacist if you feel the effect is too strong or too weak.

Side effects

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody will experience them. Possible side effects: Very high doses or chronic use of this medicine may lead to increased sodium levels in the blood, water retention (edema), and high blood pressure. As with other laxatives, prolonged use may lead to increased loss of water, potassium, and other salts. This may lead to impaired heart function and muscle weakness, particularly when taken at the same time as diuretics and adrenal cortex steroids. Special information: If you experience any of the side effects listed above, stop using this medicine and contact your doctor. They will then decide whether further action is necessary. If you experience any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects not listed.

Interactions

When using this medicine with other medicines: Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription. Sensitivity to cardiac glycosides may be increased due to increased potassium loss. Potassium loss may be increased when taken concomitantly with diuretics.

Contraindications

This medicine should not be used if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to sodium sulfate decahydrate, or if you have intestinal obstruction. It should not be used if you have high blood pressure, heart failure, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases, or water and electrolyte imbalances.
